Geektivities: Diva’s 3 Impressions of the Formation World Tour 2016, San Diego

As you probably know, I’ve been on a huge Beyoncé kick in 2016. Starting with the release of “Formation” and her Super Bowl performance and reaching a pinnacle with the Formation World Tour, which I attended LAST NIGHT with The Spaniard.

The Formation World Tour may not technically qualify as a Geektivity, but I fangirl hard over Queen Bey and that’s reason enough to share the experience with you, dear reader.

Although I haven’t had nearly enough sleep at the moment–the  traffic in and out of Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego took us an hour both ways and definitely leaves something to be desired–seeing Queen Bey live is an experience I will never forget, so I guess I won’t complain about my 4 hours of sleep and early work morning. *yawn*

Here are my 3 impressions of the show.

The Bey Hive

Beyoncé is a masterful performer with skill and talent enough to rock a stadium of 5,000 people for an intense and powerful hour-plus of music and she kept the Spaniard and I and everyone around us on our feet the entire set. She has an authentic connection to her fans and seemed legitimately pleased by the response to certain songs, dance moves or moments in her performance. Honestly, her smile is like the sun, and when she grinned at her fans for singing along to lyrics or for cheering to a picture of her at 15 years old, it felt real and sweet. Also, her fans are so diverse–I saw queer couples as well as men and women of all ethnicities, including numerous black girls with natural hair and ethnic clothing. It was so wonderful to be at the mirror in the restroom next to 4 other women with hair that looked like mine–wild, frizzy, natural and free.

Geektivities: 5 California Fan Conventions To Attend in 2014

The Collective gals got into the blogging game because of our burning desire to attend San Diego Comic-Con and coexist IRL with other nerds. If you’ve read the 2-part “Great Comic-Con Disappointment”, you’ll know that we haven’t gotten tickets, well, ever. Still, our adversity created this amazing blog and, as we grumbled much of the summer 2013 (and well into 2014), the fire continued to burn. Over the years, the Collective bloggers spent most of our time at literary conventions (we’re nerds, yes), but the need to connect with fandom is a very real and burning desire. We know finding the perfect, attainable event can become a challenge. Fan conventions are usually sold out a year in advance, which means scoping out the scene well in advance. We attended our first official fan con as a blog team in November 2013, mulling over the $85 single day ticket price for the Burbank Supernatural Convention, for about 15 seconds, before fully committing to cosplay, photo-ops and autograph sessions that turned out to be AMAZING.

My advice? As soon as you hear about a con, Google it. Look it up. Do your research. Find out how much the tickets are, when they usually go on sale and what kind of crowd your particular fan con draws. Then, start buying stuff. A entry ticket here, a photo-op there. Spread out the cost of the items you want to enjoy at the fan con over time, and it won’t hurt as much. Next, check out the list below. Doctor Who at Comic Con 2013 talks the 50th Anniversary Episode

DOCTOR WHO. Yes, I have been putting off mentioning the amaze balls Doctor Who panel that happened at SDCC2013 this Sunday because I travel through time in a linnear, nonsubjective way and therefore couldn’t speak on it before now. Spoilers! The panel in Hall H today featured show producer Marcus Wilson, show writer Mark Gatiss, “new” First Doctor David Bradley, show runner Steven Moffat, and stars Jenna Coleman and Matt Smith.

‘The Walking Dead’ at Comic Con 2013

The Walking Dead cast takes a break from kickin’ ass.

The Collective gals can’t wait to watch the cast of AMC’s The Walking Dead kill a few walkers in Season 4, which starts this October. This afternoon at San Diego Comic Con, Series stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, David Morrissey, Scott Wilson, and Chad Coleman join executive producer and showrunner Scott Gimple and executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert and special effects makeup supervisor and executive producer Greg Nicotero in a panel moderated by my favorite walker aficionado, Chris Hardwick (The Nerdist, Talking Dead) in Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center. Fans attending the panel can expect an exclusive preview of Season 4, with a look at the new characters and of course, biters.
