Beasts of No Nation Review: “If You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going”

Directed by Cary Fukunaga of “True Detective” fame, “Beasts of No Nation” is the story of Agu, a young African boy forced to become a child soldier after his family is torn apart by civil war. If that sounds horrifying to you, good. It’s supposed to be horrifying. It’s supposed to be shocking. It’s supposed to be an isolated incident, but it’s depressingly common. It’s a very intense, important film.

Making A Murderer Review: What The Hell Did I Just Watch?

Making A Murderer is a documentary about Steven Avery, a Manitowoc, Wisconsin man falsely accused of rape and imprisoned for 18 years. DNA evidence exonerated him, and upon his release from prison in 2003, he filed a lawsuit against Manitowoc county. Two years after his release, and in the middle of depositions for his false imprisonment suit, Avery was arrested for the murder of 25-year-old Teresa Halbach. The documentary, filmed over ten years, follows Avery’s murder trial and its aftermath.

Making-a-Murderer

If you possibly can, go into this documentary with as little prior knowledge as possible, and try to keep an open mind. Making A Murderer is a cultural hot topic right now, and articles and interviews and theories are everywhere. Try to wait until after you’re done watching all 10 episodes to fall down the rabbit hole. Making up your own mind about the case presented is the best way to watch this show. It’s also important to be on the lookout for filmmaker bias, because even though this is presented as a documentary, it’s definitely not unbiased journalism.

Narcos Review: “Cocaine Is A Hell Of A Drug”

When my husband suggested Narcos as our next joint TV venture, I rapidly agreed, even though all I knew about the show was that Pedro Pascal was in it, and as any Game of Thrones fan knows, the more Pedro in your life the better. I didn’t know much about Pablo Escobar, the Colombian nobody who revolutionizes the cocaine trade and becomes one of the most important drug lords in history. I didn’t know about what he’d done in Colombia or about the U.S.’s role in trying to bring him to heel or about the sheer scale of his drug operations. I had NO IDEA what I was getting myself into. Which, as it turns out, is the best possible way to watch this show. Sometimes a baseline knowledge about a show and its surroundings is essential to enjoying that show, but I’d argue that the less you know about the story of Pablo Escobar the more you’ll enjoy seeing the way this stranger-than-fiction tale plays out.
