Oh gosh, the time of the DCBB is upon us, and friends, I am freaking out just a wee bit. Yes, I’m writing another 20k+ fic this year and final drafts are due Saturday, August 15 which means we get artists soon and our posting dates and…oh gosh! What am I doing? I should be revising!

If you aren’t familiar with the Dean/Cas Big Bang (and Mini-Bang), read this post and then check out the following stories, handpicked from the wealth of Dean/Cas fan fiction posted during last year’s Big Bang extravaganza. There are so many amazing stories–these are just my top ten (with MANY bookmarked that I haven’t read yet!!). If you are a Destiel shipper and love to read fanfic but haven’t had the time to sift through the DCBB community on AO3, please, do yourself a favor and check out the authors below. I labeled this post NSFW and there is smut in some of these, but this isn’t a smut list (weird, I know). Honestly, these Big Bang entries are really lovely, and most writers have pretty impressive bibliographies to go through before fall DCBB 2015 postings begin. Happy reading and enjoy!

Find me over on Twitter and Tumblr rambling, per usual.

If you’ve read our blog regularly over the past year or so, you’ve probably noticed my mentioning how much f**king writing I was doing. Dear readers, let me tell you that I felt like a zombie as I participated in two Big Bangs challenges in the span of ten months, all the while holding a full time job, applying to grad programs, maintaining this blog, Gishing, etc.

It’s not like I was busy or anything

Later on (in a few weeks or months or whenever I restore my sanity), I’ll write more about why I chose to write in two challenges, and how my ideas came together, but right now? I have a few things I need to confess.

Confession 1: I had NO clue what I was doing.

i ship it

If you ship Destiel (as you know we do), you probably do so through the transformative works of fans. If you’re like me, you may troll the many fanfic recommendation blogs on Tumblr or go through the 30k plus works tagged “Castiel/Dean Winchester” on AO3 looking for something well written and with enough length to develop characters and plot lines. Look no further, Dean and Cas fans, the time of the DCBB is upon us.

Time for a geek-fession: I’ve  been writing a lot of fanfiction lately.

As I participate in two separate “Big Bang” fanfiction extravaganzas (yes, I know, I’m crazy for that, right?), I’m noticing that there  are a few things that have become my saving graces  as I frantically type up 15K word  drafts. So whether you’re new to the fanfic biz or you’re a tried-and-true transformative work veteran, here are a few things that you need to successfully write that 100K word Coffeeshop AU.

Take a Notebook With You Everywhere

Okay, okay, I know you’ve heard this one before, but it’s true. Let me tell you why:

A few years ago I was taking a scriptwriting course, and one of our assignments was to transcribe a five-minute conversation. As I sat inside a Starbucks waiting for my interviewee to arrive, I rifled aimlessly through my notebook, reviewing notes on script formatting and whatnot (I was absolutely not doodling).

There was a couple sitting behind me, and try as I might, I couldn’t help but overhear their conversation. They were breaking up, and the conversation was getting heated. About five minutes later, I was really f**king glad I had a pen and paper, because sometimes life is so much stranger than fiction. Here’s an excerpt of that conversation:
