When I was a child, I would always be looking for mysterious paths on camping trips, or secret passages in unfamiliar houses. I wanted to find—if not an entirely different world—something out of the ordinary, and secret. Fiction where characters do enter other worlds is generally called portal fantasy, and the most well-known example is probably C. S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. Four siblings crawl into another world through the back of a wardrobe, and have marvelous adventures.
