The Collective Crew attended LACC 2019 this last weekend, and it was our fifth year of attendance! It’s one of our favorite conventions, and we always look forward to seeing what people will bring to the floor in terms of cosplay, art, geek chic fashion, and new pop culture trends.
In addition to the ever-present superheroes and princesses, we saw an influx of Good Omens cosplays. This isn’t terribly surprising given its newfound popularity with fans, but still uplifting to see in person—especially when the Collectress and I were dressed as Crowley and Aziraphale ourselves! Everyone we encountered as the ineffable demon and angel duo was very down to earth and as equally excited to meet others in the fandom as we were. Although we missed the official meetup on Saturday, we took part in a last-minute meetup on Friday evening. When you have that many Neil Gaiman characters in one place, you’re required to document it, after all.
The second new thing we noticed was the creation of Tik Tok videos. This platform has been in markets outside of China since 2017, but I had never seen its prevalence out in public before. Apparently, cosplayers love Tik Tok even more than they loved Dubsmash. (We created a few videos of our own, which you can find @ thecollectedcosplayers.) It will be interesting to see how various fandoms continue to interact with, and influence, this more recent addition to internet memes and pop culture.
And without further ado, here is our cosplay gallery! If you see someone you recognize, please let us know in the comments below.
Thank you to our contributor Nerdy Donut for taking care of our photography needs during the convention!
Until next year, nerds. xo.
