A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about my worries for the Birds of Prey movie. I was concerned both DC Films and Warner Bros were ignoring the female superhero team-up movie to push the male-dominated Joker to the forefront. I still feel Birds is not being given the level of hype other DC movies have been giving in the past, but at least some marketing has started.
On Monday, the first posters for Birds were released. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is front and center. It makes sense since both the actress and character are well known.
The posters are wildly colorful and fun. I really love how stunning they look. You really get a sense this is going to be an unapologetically female film. Plus, Harley has a hyena in one! For fans of the 90’s animated series, this is an awesome little Easter Egg.
Yesterday the first trailer dropped and gave us a taste of how Birds will be tonally.
Like the posters, Quinn and the star of the show, but I don’t think this will be entirely her movie. Her presence is being used to generate interest in a DC property which is not the most well known outside of comic readers. Also like the posters, the trailer is unapologetically female. But not colorfully female, angrily female. Judging by the tone, this is a movie about a group of women who are pissed off at men who use and abuses them and they are not going to take it anymore.
There is some minor plot to be glimmered from the trailer. Harley and Joker have broken up and it was not amicable. Needing a fresh start, Harley has gone to work for Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). She gets into trouble with him, probably for helping Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco). Harley and Cassandra team up with Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to stop Black Mask.
I really hope future trailers don’t tell us any more than what we can assume from this trailer. I don’t think most of us need more than that. What I do hope for in future marketing is more from Renee Montoya, Black Canary, and Huntress to build up interest in these new (to film) characters.
Just from the posters and trailer alone, I think there is a lot for fans to get excited over. For those who are put off by the dominance of Harley Quinn, I think it might be best to wait on judgement. She is front and center to help sell a new series of films starring Cassandra Cain, Renee Montoya, Huntress, and Black Canary.
What did you think of the Birds of Prey trailer? Are you excited to see this movie? Let me know in the comments.

Since moving back to her homeland, Nerdling flirted with a hero reputation. Saving children from the dangers of adoring domineering, sparkly vampires (champions with souls are the only vampires worth loving) and teaching normals the value of nerdom, all while rooting for her beloved Dallas Stars.
