In the midst of countless retellings of Disney films, we’re finally getting something that goes beyond the story we already know. The sequel to 2014’s Maleficent, entitled Mistress of Evil, will hit theaters this October, and I for one am jumping up and down in my excitement.

The initial film already gave us a different angle on the famous Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, but this second installment promises to go even further. Picking up several years after the events of Maleficent, the sequel will introduce us to new magic and new threats, and continue to explore the ever evolving and complex relationship between Maleficent and Aurora. Oh, and Michelle Pfeiffer is in it. That’s right.

Though we don’t know much yet about the intricacies of the plot, the trailer tells me one thing for certain: in storytelling, villains are as multi-faceted and important as the heroes we are told to love…
