“Carrying Torches” by ladyphlogiston
Pairing: Elizabeth Bennet/William Darcy
Word Count: 24,419
Warnings: None
Author’s Summary:
Pride and Prejudice, set in the Roaring Twenties (1925ish) outside New York. Not a particularly strict retelling, but the characters stay themselves. Speakeasies, slang, and probably gangsters.
My Thoughts:
I don’t know what it is about Pride & Prejudice. I enjoy Jane Austin as much as the next literary loving nerd, but there is something about the love story of Elizabeth and Darcy. Whatever that something is, it has me wanting to search out their fanfic more so than any of Austin’s other pairings.
This fanfic is fun. The roaring ’20s is a very interesting era. Speakeasies, jazz, and gangsters! Oh my! The decade of decadence sets up this version of P&P well. The author does her best to use era-appropriate slang, which is always entertaining. Wickham is extra evil, like The Lizzie Bennet Diaries level of evil.
I’m good with it since I always want to hate that guy. Fanfics where Wickham’s wickedness is ambiguous just doesn’t have that punch.
