No, this isn’t an old headline. Downton Abbey is returning to audiences in 2019 thanks to a film sequel. While the teaser trailer doesn’t divulge any plotlines, it feels just enough like the opening credits we know and love to get fans excited about the possibilities.
What we know so far is that many of our old favorites will reprise their roles, including Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, Joanne Froggatt, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, and several others. The script was written by Julian Fellowes, the genius behind the original 5 season television run, so we can be sure to expect a mixture of laughter, heartache, and the sometimes strained but somehow familiar collision of upstairs vs downstairs.
The film is set to premiere September 13, 2019 in the United Kingdom, and on September 20, 2019 in the United States. Until then, I eagerly await a longer trailer with more detail. What do you think awaits the Crawleys? Let me know in the comments below, or over on Twitter.
