.I’m currently (always) deeply obsessed with the dulcet voice of Diego Luna, and because of many hours of text message squeeing with my friend over him, I thought it only fitting to share my favorite Diego Luna movie for this week’s film recommendation.
The Book of Life follows the story of a young man named Manolo (Diego Luna), who comes from a family of bullfighters–but he’d rather be a musician. He falls in love with Maria (Zoe Saldana), and must face death and the afterlife, so that they can be together. The film also features Channing Tatum as Joaquin, the town’s hero in residence, and Ice Cube as the Candle Maker.
Manolo’s story follows the archetypal hero’s journey, but the ingenuity in the illustration, animation, and soundtrack really set it apart from other films of its genre. It is visually stunning, especially La Muerte, who I could stare at all day.
And if that isn’t enough to sell you on the sheer beauty of this film, look at this:
And if that still isn’t enough to convince, perhaps the sound of Diego Luna singing Radiohead will do it?
The Book of Life is available to rent on Amazon Video.
