Diva Ships: Leonard “Bones” McCoy/Spock
In transformative fandom, Star Trek is known to have what is considered the first self-published fanfic, with fictional tales by fans published in ‘zines as early as 1968, according to Fanlore.org. After rewatching the first 5 films with CollectiveSmash, I can see why.
The relationships between characters are intense. If we factor in the show premiering in 1966 and the franchise spanning 50 years, it’s no wonder fans continue to be intrigued by particular pairings–the crew of the Enterprise has known each other FOREVER and there is so much canon to cover. According to AO3 there are 50,833 fanworks with the Star Trek tag, many of those with particular pairings.
9,592 James T. Kirk/Spock
6,728 James T. Kirk/Leonard “Bones” McCoy
2,087 Spock/Nyota Uhura
2,005 Leonard “Bones” McCoy/Spock
1,056 Pavel Chekov/Hikaru Sulu
722 James T. Kirk/Leonard “Bones” McCoy/Spock
just to name a few…
After watching the first 5 films in succession, I can see why, not only are there still Star Trek films being made, but fanfic being written and fanart being drawn. As of the time of writing this, the most recent AO3 fanfic posted December 21, 2017 and we just got a new Star Trek movie in 2016.
Even though I’ve been watching Star Trek since I was a kid, I have never really shipped any pairing. If anything, I have always been a sucker for Kirk philandering through outer space–a lover in every port, a cheesy kiss on every planet. It was only recently, as I watched the reboot Star Trek (2009) film, that I began to develop an affection for the Leonard “Bones” McCoy/Spock pairing and booooy, the rewatch of the older films just enforced this ship for me. The snarky sexual tension, the witty banter, the obvious love that they share for their Captain and mutual best friend–I feel like these two are just as likely to drink too much whiskey at the bar and fall into bed as they are to drink too much whiskey and get in a fist fight.
I dig it.
There are over 2000 AO3 fics with the Spock/Doc pairing, but my favorite story is Sharing Rooms by notboldly. It’s short, sweet and a little smutty, which is right in my wheelhouse, plus there is bed sharing, if you’re into that sort of thing, and I know you are.
Join us tonight at 6pm PT as we live tweet Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
with the #ToBoldlyWatch hashtag.
Liz Ships: James Kirk/Spock
What can I say, I’m a sucker for a juggernaut.
As I’ve mentioned a million times, I’m new to this whole Trek thing. But it took me literally three seconds to ship what I call Spork.
I’m a sucker for so many things that this ship has to offer: friends-to-lovers, that non-verbal communication, intrinsic trust, and the ability to call each other on their bullshit. Plus the LOOKS.
Add in that Spock is Vulcan and hyper-logical and has a low EQ, yet has very human feelings for his friend that affords a level of intimacy that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end, and I’m a goner.
I haven’t delved into fic yet, but Mel has sent me recs and I cannot WAIT to get into them. Do you have Star Trek ships? Share your feelings in the comments!
