The first trailer dropped for Star Trek Discovery and we here at the Collective are dying over it. Here’s a few of the reasons why:

1. Sonequa Martin-Green.
2. SONEQUA MARTIN-GREEN.
3. An incredibly talented and diverse cast such as Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), SONEQUA MARTIN-GREEN (The Walking Dead), Anthony Rapp (Rent), Jason Isaacs (The Patriot), Shazad Latif (Penny Dreadful), and Rekha Sharma (Battlestar Galactica) to name a few.
4. New cultures, and new aspects of familiar ones, such as the Ancient Klingons, which, yes, is why they look a little different than say, The Next Generation’s Lieutenant Worf. Some have also asserted that part of Discovery’s storyline might be discussing the Levodian flu (See this Wiki for more info on the plague)

The show will take place before the original Star Trek series, so it will be interesting to see how the writers keep the show congruous with the rest of the, rather large, ST canon. (It should be noted, however, that this show will not take place in the same timeline as the current Star Trek film series…wooooo this could get confusing for new fans!)

It’s been twelve years since a Trek show aired on television, and while CBS All Access isn’t quite like previous serially-released series, Discovery does promise us what Star Trek often delivers: a crew exploring new worlds and boldly going where no one has gone before. As a lifelong Trekker, I can proudly admit that watching this is going to feel a little bit like coming home. And, I can only wonder what the late Leonard Nimoy would have thought of the newest incarnation of a franchise that defined his career. Personally, I think he would be excited by the direction they’re taking it.  

Star Trek Discovery will be premiering a two-part debut episode and launching on the CBS All Access streaming service this fall, with a 15-episode first season and a post-episode talk show called Talking Trek. Until then, join me in staring at this gorgeous poster, which will be the new background on my phone in 3, 2….
