This hasn’t been the easiest couple of months, am I right, world population? In America, we’re trying to wrap our minds around the next 4 years, while capitalism and the commercialism of Christmas makes it difficult for me to find holiday spirit in 2016. I’ve been listening to a lot of different music lately, but no Christmas music, to which, when I told my mother, she reacted by saying, “Who are you and what have you done with my daughter?!” It’s been difficult to get into the spirit of things, this year, for a number of reasons, some personal and others global. Recently, I participated in a weekend of service and have been trying to gain some perspective by helping others in order to find my “reason for the season”, but the holidays can be difficult, so, yeah, no Christmas music.
Chance the Rapper, one of the most underrated talents of 2016, in my opinion, along with Jeremih, released a Christmas mixtape for free, on the web, and all of a sudden, I’m feeling Christmas-y. I have been obsessed with Chance the Rapper for a while now, and have been actually listening to his album on repeat instead of Christmas music this season, because it is joyful, and honest, both of which I am in desperate need of these days. To me, “Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama” feels like a precious gift. You can find it on Soundcloud and MyMixtapez.com, and it’s beautiful. There are familiar voices if you’re a fan of Chance, and then there’s Jeremih, who is fun and cool, and I’m just so in love with this album, I want everyone to listen to it. This is a raw and honest, sweet and festive album I highly recommend, especially if you’ve been having a hard time finding holiday spirit, like I have.
Happy Christmas, from my family to yours. You, too, reader, are a gift that we here at the Collective, don’t take for granted.
