“I have been loved,” she said, “by something strange, and it has forgotten me.”
–Djuna Barnes, Nightwood
Sidney jerks awake, bleary and disoriented, with his mouth open on words already forgotten and a tightness in his chest that he knows is loss and longing.
Sidney dreams, memories of a past life intruding on the one he’s living now. But there’s no such thing as selkies, and no such thing as a love that lasts across two lifetimes. Until, of course, there is.
I don’t know about you, but the holidays sometimes make me want to hide in a corner and read fanfic until everyone leaves my house…which is exactly what I did on American Thanksgiving with this story. I keep saying I’m not one for soulmate fics AND YET I keep finding soulmate fics in this pairing that I adore. This story is so unique and thoughtfully written, I had to reread in within days of my first run through, just to catch some of the subtle emotional tugs that the writer embedded in the text. I found myself tearing up at the sheer beauty of the soul bond connection between the two main characters, and giggling with joy as the inevitable came to pass. Be warned, this is a s-l-o-w burn, and will give you soooo many feelings as Sidney contemplates his self worth and Geno exercises immense amounts of patience throughout this winding tale. Note the poetry at the beginning of each chapter, the snippets are worth reading before delving into each new section. When you’re done, read everything by Ladyblahblah. Trust me.
Happy shipping, friends!
