“Worse Than A Boy Who Hates You” by Omelet
Pairings: Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin
Word Count: 20,966
The first time Sidney Crosby meets Evgeni Malkin, the crowd is on their feet and roaring and he’s flat on his ass on the ice, staring up at Malkin’s face haloed by the glaring stadium lights.
The first time I read this story, I had to stop and cackle after the intro paragraph because the premise is just WAAAAY out of left field and I wasn’t expecting it, but, somehow, it works so well. Omelet takes the familiar “enemies to friends” trope and turns it on it’s head, creating a universe that makes sense even though it feels really, really strange (at first). No, this isn’t magical realism, but if you’re a Pens fan, well, it might seem that way. There are a lot of feelings, some pining and sexy times–I think I might have even teared up at one point. Currently, I’ve read it half a dozen times and keep finding reasons to return to this story, this verse, this pairing.
