“Geno? Are you okay? Physically,” Sid asks, which is good, because Zhenya doesn’t think he can put into words how he’s feeling emotionally. He imagines saying, The person I’ve loved for ten years finally took me to bed last night, but it turns out he didn’t want to, and now I can read his mind. No, thank you.
“Feel fine,” Zhenya answers. “Even head feel fine.” And suddenly he realizes how fucking odd that is: he was concussed, and the room is brightly lit – he should be hiding under a blanket right now. He narrows his eyes and asks, “Sid, why head feel fine? What happen to concussion?”
Sid takes a halting step closer to the bed and says, “Our bond, it’s—it’s a healing bond.”
“Holy mother of God,” Zhenya breathes. So. They’re definitely not breaking the bond, then.
I know a lot of people do not read RPF and I totally respect that, but lately, it’s all I do read, so much so, I’ve actually started writing my own fic in this particular pairing. This particular story is canon-esque with the twist of souldbonds being perfectly normal throughout this ‘verse. Now, I’m not big on the soul bond fics, but this one really stands out to me because of the way Deastar creates the crisis and the solution that causes the boys to become bonded. Be warned, there is a “fuck or die” essence that might make some readers uncomfortable in the opening scenes, but the author takes such care of the characters, even I, with a very real trigger in terms of noncon and anything remotely resembling noncon, am able to find, not only value, but importance to the scenes that lead to healing through healthy communication. There is world building and just lovely characterization that this slow–oh so slow–burn that makes this worth the read. The first story stands alone really well, but Deastar also has a slew of Tumblr shorts and mini-fics in the same verse that are lovely. If you read NBK and enjoyed it, I highly recommend adding this to your must-read list!
