A “Preacher” Starter Kit for Noobs

From DC’s Vertigo imprint comes another amazing comic turned tv show, this time in the form of the gritty and violent Preacher. Now, I must admit I’d not got round to reading the comics prior to planning on writing these articles, but I finally made time and I must say I’m hooked!

The comics ran from 1995 to 2000 and contain a huge chunk of violence, so expect the show to be bloody. The comic creators, Garth Ennis, Steve Dillon and Glenn Fabry previously worked together on Hellblazer, particularly the popular Dangerous Habits story arc. So if you were a fan of Constantine before it’s cancellation, then this could be the show for you.

The preacher himself, Jesse Custer, will be played by Dominic Cooper (previously Howard Stark in Agent Carter). A troubled character who spent a lot of his life in trouble with the law and his religious sect family, now returned to town as a preacher to make amends. Tulip O’Hare is a kick ass, gun toting childhood friend and equally troubled character. We find her in trouble with the Mexican Cartel and holding her own with style. Played by Ruth Negga (previously Misfits and Agents of Shield), she is white in the comics but they have tried to bring them up to date and add female (also making one of the big bads female) and minority characters. Finally the terrible trio is finished with Cassidy, played by Joe Gilgun (also previously Misfits), an Irish vampire who strikes up a reluctant friendship with Jesse. The trio are united on a mission when the illegal offspring of a demon and an angel named Genesis, breaks free of his prison and goes on a rampage. Eventually finding Jesse and leaving him with some strange powers…

A long time in the making, it’s been picked up and passed along by many a director and studio before landing into the lap of AMC, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Ennis and Dillon are credited as executive producers, so they are planning to remain faithful to the creation at least in part. Although it seems to be deviating from the comics storyline (seeming to begin earlier in the timeline), it still holds all the charm of the comics. It’s going to be a wild ride through heaven, hell and Texas!

Touted by Nerdists Jessica Chobot as one of the best pilot scripts she’s read in a long time, it looks set to wow regardless.

Catch it on AMC, May 22nd 10/9c, watch the preview below, and look for my weekly reviews starting next week!
