When faced with a tragedy, at any age, the impact it has on our future can either make us stronger or turn us to the dark side. It all depends on the support we have or don’t have.
**** NEWS FLASH – SPOILERS AHEAD ****
Barry/Flash’s (Grant Gustin) tragic loss of his Mother and false imprisonment of his Father when he was a child could have crippled him, but because of the love and support of Joe and Iris, he grew into the compassionate superhero he is today.
Hunter Zolomon on the other hand had a completely opposite experience. Witnessing the murder of his Mother at the hands of his Father turned him into a serial killer because he had no family who was willing to support him.
It is this contrast between the light and the dark side of tragedy that comes to a head when Flash finally finds a way to increase his speed in order to defeat Zoom once and for all.
With the aid of a tachion device attached to the front of his suit, Flash is able to increase his speed by four times, which is actually faster than Zoom.
Now the question is how to reopen a portal/breach to Earth 2?
Harry (Tom Cavanagh) refuses to help on the grounds that he doesn’t want Zoom coming after his daughter or any of their loved ones again. He has no heart or soul and will stop at nothing to steal Flash’s speed.
Barry refuses to just let him continue to torture the people of Earth 2. He is determined to get back to Earth 2 and end Zoom’s reign of terror for good.
A conversation with Joe (Jesse L. Martin) about Wally’s doppelgänger on Earth 2 sets Barry in the direction he needs to solve the reopening of the portal problem. Cisco’s doppelgänger Reverb could alter time and space with his power, which means so can Cisco. That is if he thinks he can.
After a few failed attempts, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) is ready to give up. That is until Harry steps in with a tweaked pair of Reverb’s glasses. Turns out Joe talked Harry into helping on the grounds that if he doesn’t Barry could get killed because he will never back down from his quest to defeat Zoom.
With the tweaked glasses, Cisco is able to open a portal, but the whole thing freaks him out and he stops before it’s complete. He fears with this much power he too could turn to the dark side just as his doppelgänger did. Barry points out that this will never happen because his family won’t let him. They will be there supporting him every step of the way.
In a quest to find Zoom’s weak spot, Harry questions Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) about Jay’s doppelgänger on Earth 1. Caitlin explains that his doppelgänger on Earth 1 was not Jay Garrick, but Hunter Zolomon.
This is all Harry needs to put the pieces together in regards to Zoom. Explaining that Hunter Zolomon was a serial killer on Earth 2 who was sent to a prison for the criminally insane. His electrocution must have coincided with the particle accelerator exploding and creating an even more unstable monster.
Having this info puts Team Flash at the advantage. Their plan to capture and put an end to Zoom goes into motion. Zoom/Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears) jumps through the portal the minute Cisco gets it opened. A battle and chase between Flash and Zoom quickly takes off, with Barry leading Zoom to Star Labs where they have set a trap using images of Hunter’s Father and Mother. This is enough to stop Zoom and throw him off just long enough for Flash to shock him and lock him down.
It looks like Team Flash may very well have finally achieved their goal. Zoom is submissive. Pointing out that Barry may have very well turned out just like him. Barry tells him never, I have family that supports me.
Zoom points out that family is a weakness. Barry disagrees. Zoom’s demeanor switches back to the evil incarnate that he is stating “You can’t lock the darkness out.”
With that he breaks free and is gone. He heads to the West resident and takes Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) who has recently moved in. He will only return Wally when Flash turns over his speed.
Having no other way out, Flash gives in. Zoom holds up his end of the bargain, bringing Wally to Star Labs where he is quickly whisked off by Cisco.
The time of reckoning is upon Flash, but before he steps on the treadmill to have his speed drained, he wants to know how Zoom pulled off being Jay Garrick, Good Flash, who died and Hunter Zolomon, Bad Zoom at the same time.
By using a time remnant of himself he was able to create his alter ego, Good Flash, who gave the people of Earth 2 hope, while Zoom ravaged their world.
Caitlin is beyond disturbed by all of this, calling him a monster, just as his Mother called his Father before he killed her.
Once the transfer of speed from Flash into a syringe gun created by Harry is complete, Jay/Zoom grabs the gun and immediately injects himself. He’s beyond energized and goes after Flash, who is now just a regular human again.
On the verge of killing him, Caitlin steps in. Pleading with Jay, “If you have any humanity left in you, let him go.”
Obviously Caitlin still has a little influence over Jay, he drops Flash, but before zooming off, grabs Caitlin, taking her back to his lair on Earth 2.
And here we are left hanging.
How can Caitlin be saved if Barry is no longer the Flash?
Can he ever regain his speed?
