Nate Parker’s story about the Nat Turner rebellion is coming to theatres October 7, 2016 and it is the must-watch movie of the season, according to critics at the Sundance Film Festival. The film won the grand jury prize and the audience award for American dramatic features and features a compelling story in American history that may not be as well known as it should be. In a time when the Black Lives Matter movement is prominent and society examines the berth between Blacks and Whites in America, the timely exploration may bring a refreshing new take on an old topic.
“Set against the antebellum South, The Birth of a Nation follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer). accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities-against himself and his fellow slaves- Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.”
