Taking short cuts, particularly when dealing with superpowers, is never a good idea. Sometimes the repercussions of your actions outweigh the desired effect in a deadly way.
**** NEWS FLASH – SPOILERS AHEAD ****
Worn out and in need of a break after pushing to help Barry/Flash (Grant Gustin) run faster, Team Flash decides a night on the town is in order. While out, they encounter a new Speedster who is using their powers for evil, stealing wallets, purses and emptying cash registers in a 10 block radius in just 6 minutes.
Whoever this speedster is they have Flash beat, but who is this is and how can they be faster?
Believing that exposure to the particle accelerator explosion is the only way to become a speedster, Barry is more than upset when he finds out that Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Harry (Tom Cavanagh) are not only aware of Velocity 9 AKA V9, but capable of producing this drug that can accelerate one’s speed. Furious, he questions why they just didn’t use this on him when he was trying to increase his speed in order to beat Zoom.
Caitlin explains that the drug is dangerous and was killing Jay. He had taken it on Earth 2 in his attempt to beat Zoom and although it worked, it was slowly breaking down his cellular structure. The more he used, the worse he got.
Before this discussion can go any further, a meta alert sends Barry out after the new Speedster. His brief encounter with the mystery Speedster doesn’t go well, but he does discover this one is a woman and her suit was constructed by someone who had to have access to the technology and lab needed to create a speedster suit. With this knowledge, a light bulb goes off in Caitlin’s head. When she was fine-tuning V9, she consulted a former colleague, Eliza Harman (Allison Paige), at Mercury Labs because she was having trouble with the cellular matrix in the drug.
A quick visit to Mercury Lab by Caitlin and Joe (Jesse L. Martin) leaves them believing Eliza is a dead-end. They find out quickly they are wrong.
Eliza has become addicted to V9, which ultimately has created an alter ego, which is quickly taking control of her. After using her last dose of V9, Eliza, or Trajectory as she calls herself, shows up at Star Labs in need of a fix.
First locking Barry/Flash in the tube, then taking Jesse (Violett Beane) hostage, she demands all the V9 they have in stock. Turns out Barry had considered using Caitlin’s last dose, but after a pep talk from Harry, realizes there is no shortcut to increasing speed, so he destroys it. With none available and his daughter’s life at risk, Harry caves and creates a batch of V9 for Eliza.
Not taking any chance that the drug was laced with a slow-downer, Eliza injects Jesse. Once she sees it’s safe, she takes off. Jesse starts to go into to shock from the purity of the drug. Needs a blood transfusion from her and Harry in order to survive. Side note, Earth 2 blood types are not the same as Earth 1.
It’s not long before Eliza is back to creating chaos. Running back and forth across a bridge filled with traffic, her friction is slowly destroying the bridge. Before Flash can go after her, he needs to quickly get all the people on the bridge to safety. By this time the bridge collapses, leaving Flash on the opposite side of the bridge. In order to make this jump Flash’s additional speed training is put to the test.
Successfully making the jump and landing on Eliza, knocking her to the ground, he gets the upper hand. Flash tries to no avail to get through to the human side of Eliza.
The pull from her alter ego Trajectory is too strong. Injecting herself with another dose of V9, she baits Flash, “How does it feel to know I’m faster than you’ll ever be.” and takes off.
As she runs her orange lightning streak quickly turns to blue and she disintegrates. All that’s left is her suit.
Back at Star Labs, Caitlin points out that cellular degeneration is side effect from V9, which she obviously overdosed on. It’s at this point that Harry puts the pieces together; Jay was not the only one dying from taking V9, Zoom is too. That’s why he wanted Flash; he needs a cure, just like Jay.
Could it be that Jay and Zoom are one in the same?
Cisco confesses that he’s been vibing Zoom, but only when he touches Jay’s helmet. Harry pushes Cisco to trying vibing Zoom again. This time he sees Zoom take off his mask revealing the man under the mask is indeed Jay (Teddy Sears).
How could there be two Jays?
Did his alter ego Zoom manifest into a physical form of its own?
Wells Family Drama
Harry’s overprotection of Jesse gets put to the test when she discovers a message he left about his willingness to kill in order to save her. The friction builds until Jesse realizes it’s time for her to venture off on her own. She no longer needs her Daddy to shield her from harm. She’s had the best teacher she could ever have, now it’s time to put this knowledge to the test and explore the new world of Earth 1.
Iris May Have a New Beau
Iris’ boss Scott (Tone Bell) is determined to prove that Flash has gone rogue. The stress of being the good guy has made him crack and he’s turned to the dark side. This puts her at odds with him, particularly when he wants her to write the lead article. In an effort to procrastinate till Team Flash can unravel the truth, she asks him to go for coffee to discuss the story. He misinterprets her intentions, which in turns causes embarrassment for both of them. When the truth vindicates Flash, and Iris’ front-page story is hit, Iris (Candice Patton) confesses she was caught off guard the night before, and is s.
