Lucifer Recap: “Wingman”

lucifer recap

This little known DC release, Lucifer, is a spin off from the very popular title The Sandman – written by Neil Gaiman. The comic series, which is under the Vertigo imprint, continues this character’s story arc within the wider DC universe – even meeting with John Constantine once! Here are my thoughts…

Episode 7 takes us to just past halfway through the season. It begins with Mazikeen luring a man from Lux to torture him for information, we learn it’s the fifth man they’ve tried to interrogate to find Lucifer’s wings. Maze reluctantly lets the man live once Lucifer decides they need to switch their approach.

Meanwhile Chloe is struggling at work because the cop she is investigating for corruption is having his life support switched off. Dan implores her to drop the investigation or at least wrap it up in the next 24 hours, to which she reluctantly agrees.

Lucifer then meets with Amenadiel on the beach where he landed after his escape from hell. He tries to get Amenadiel on board with his search for the wings, but things get tense. Amenadiel suggests to Lucifer if he wants free will so badly he should face the consequences and search alone.

Both in need of some assistance with their problems Chloe and Lucifer agree to help one another. First Chloe puts out an APB for a pair of wings and then Lucifer helps her reenact the scene of the shooting with Dan. She just can’t seem to figure out who shot the policeman and why.

The APB then comes up with some wings that are due to be sold at a ‘religious artifacts’ auction the FBI are planning to raid. However unable to let his wings be claimed as evidence Lucifer plans to infiltrate the auction and get them before the FBI show up. As he arrives at the venue he finds Amenadiel, who has turned up to apparently make sure Lucifer doesn’t screw things up, he then states he should take the wings to heaven where they belong so nothing like this happens again. Chloe then turns up, saying she had a feeling Lucifer would do this.

After Amenadiel finds out Lucifer is now something close to mortal, he laughs as he realises he just needs to wait, after all if Lucifer dies he will be forced back to hell without his consent anyway. The wings are then revealed just as the FBI began their raid, and Amenadiel slows down time to allow Lucifer to reclaim the wings. But upon closer inspection he realises they are fakes and his real wings are elsewhere. Chloe and Lucifer then argue about whose case takes priority and leave separately, Amenadiel being dismissed as Lucifer says his next steps will be Devilish.

Chloe goes back to the scene of the shooting with Dan and discovers a hidden doorway the shooter must have used. They find a key belonging to an LAPD cop in the tunnel, so there must be another cop involved as the one in the coma still had his key. At the same time Lucifer is tracking down the auctioneer at his home, where he finds him staring at the wings he has mounted in a case. There he finds out the name of the real orchestrator of the whole plot.

Lucifer then meets Amenadiel on the beach again, this time sat with his wings on the sand. There he informs him his plan wasn’t successful, Amenadiel had hoped once Lucifer was reunited with his wings he would don them once again and feel a renewed sense of purpose. But Lucifer instead burns his wings so he will never again be faced with the temptation of returning to hell. Amenadiel then punches Lucifer and exclaims he will do whatever it takes to get him back to hell.

Chloe and Dan then attend the memorial for the cop involved in the shooting, after some tension Chloe apologises for her actions and then claims to be dropping her investigation. But when she speaks to Dan later we realise it is just to make the other cop involved believe they are in the clear.

Back at Lux we find Lucifer playing the piano and apologising to Maze for forcing her hand about staying on earth, but she swears to stick by him no matter what. Chloe appears and they make up without telling each other how their respective cases went.

It ends back at the hospital where the family of the cop are getting ready to pull the plug on his life support, however once they do he begins to come back to life with the help of one mysterious and pissed off Amenadiel.

Things we learnt this episode:

Amenadiel now knows of Chloe and Lucifer’s attachment to her.
Lucifer will go straight to hell if he dies.
Maze saved one of Lucifer’s feathers from the aftermath on the beach.

Lucifer is scheduled to air Mondays on Fox (9/8c).
