I power watched season 1 of HTGAWM so that I could enjoy the second season live and, after discovering that I have a really disturbing obsession with the topic, I’ve decided to pen weekly reviews of this ground-breaking show. If you’re not caught up with the current season, visit Netflix and watch Season 1, then go to ABC.com to watch season 2 with me. Enjoy!
Spoilers ahead, Sweetie…
S2xE11: “She Hates Us”
Right off the bat, we get Sam, Bonnie, Frank and a pregnant Annalise ten years ago. These flashbacks will be par for the course this episode, along an even more pronounced juxtaposition between Annalise and Wes’ mental health issues in the present. Wes isn’t sleeping and so he goes to a medical professional to get sleeping pills, while Annalise is still recovering from being shot in the gut and is acting depressed and angry. Still, she goes to court because she’s Annalise, and on the case she’s working, the mother of a murder victim asks the court for a restorative justice sit-down session, in which the accused apologizes and explains to the victim’s family (in this case, mom) in exchange for a lesser sentence. As always, the case reflects closely the inner turmoil of the Keating Five in regards to Asher’s “accidental” murder of D.A. Sinclair. Annalise’s client has led everyone to believe the death was more an act of passion than a premeditated murder, much like Asher’s. While TK5 reflect on the mother’s true motives for the restorative justice decision, Asher stares off into the distance to most likely contemplate his own sins and mortality.
In the meantime, Wes is in the psych ward because he joked about suicide and when Laurel finally tells Annalise that Wes is screwed up because of shooting her, and -out of the blue-Annalise fires her, which doesn’t sit well with Laurel, who has been an advocate of sticking together and by Annalise’s side, and so, as soon as she gets the chance, she rallies TK5 behind her and they all walk out on Annalise and their work.
A big part of this episode focuses on the fact that Wes and Annalise are both sick, because of each other, and need to work their shit out before the Keating Five can get back to the murder business. There is a divide, and whatever is between Wes and Annalise, whether it has to do with Annalise’s pregnancy and Wes’ mother (and this weird hedge fund case from the 90s??) or all the death they’ve seen between them, this group needs a bit of honesty and forgiveness. We continue to get flashbacks to the past, specifically including Bonnie and Frank, and then we hop right into the present, and Annalise’s restorative justice case, which is really, really sad. The poignant confrontation between the victim’s mother and her son’s killer (Jason), with Annalise and Asher both sitting there trying to remain straight faced–well it’s intense and touching for everyone involved. That is, until Annalise’s client admits that he purposefully killed her son and the prosecuting lawyer tries to use his confession (which is inadmissible in court) to add years onto Jason’s sentence. The mother reiterates to Annalise that only her feelings and her son’s killer’s well being matter, and so they work “together” to keep the plea deal and Annalise learns a lesson in beating hate, even though her entire team seems to hate her (and the feeling is mutual).
There’s a lot going on in this episode between TK5, Annalise, Bonnie and Frank in terms of them confessing their feelings of anger, disappointment and guilt over the things they’ve done to others and each other. Wes and Annalise finally talk and she admits to knowing his mother and gives him the hedge fund murder file. My favorite part of the episode is when TK5 is in the car, talking about their feelings, thanks to Asher, who needs some of the support that has been severely lacking in the murder club. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to like TK5 any longer, but I can’t help it, I do. I want them to get away with all the murders! And get off all the semi/probably/most likely guilty clients! I also really want Nate and Annalise to hook up again. Mama needs some lovin…
