Sometimes doing the right thing comes with great heartache and consequences.
**** NEWS FLASH – SPOILERS AHEAD ****
With Patty gone, Barry (Grant Gustin) focuses on mending his broken heart by burying himself into his work. Nothing like trying to find a way to close the 52 breaches all over Central City to take your mind off a failed relationship.
Barry is enthusiastic about working with Harry (Tom Cavanagh). It feels like the good old days, before Wells turned out to be the bad guy. If only Harry felt the same way.
If Harry wasn’t so pre-occupied with creating a device to steal Flash’s speed for Zoom in order to get his daughter back he just might enjoy being a mentor to Barry. Instead, he’s just downright rude, condescending and arrogant, trying hard to push Barry away. Kind of hard to be nice to the person you’re betraying.
By combining the knowledge Harry obtained from Turtle’s brain matter and studying Reverse Flash, he is successful in creating a device to attach to Flash’s suit which will remotely and slowly transfer Flash’s speed into a vial for Zoom to inject.
The loss of speed almost goes unnoticed by Flash. He just thinks he’s tired. It’s Cisco (Carlos Valdes) who spots a subtle decrease in Flash’s speed after his encounter with the meta of the week, Tar Pit (Marco Grazzini), as he endearingly gets dubbed. With diagnostic tests, Caitlyn (Danielle Panabaker) finds that Flash’s speed has decreased by 2%.
Harry remains quiet, offering no guidance or suggestions as to what could be doing this.
Could his quilt be building?
Although Team Flash is baffled by Flash’s speed loss, they have Tar Pit to contend with before they can focus on the issue. Having been killed by being dropped into a vat of tar at the same time the particle accelerator exploded, Tar Pit has the ability to turn into liquid asphalt. Out for revenge, going after the guys who killed him, he’s suffocating them with tar, just as they did to him.
One of his targets is the ringleader behind the drag racing, which Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) is still doing, despite the absence of his Mother’s medical bills.
The issue of Wally drag racing becomes a major bone of contention between Iris (Candice Patton) and Joe (Jesse L. Martin). Iris believes Joe is more concerned about being a friend to Wally and is forgoing his Fatherly duties in doing so, thus turning his back on the dangers Wally is facing when drag racing.
To prove her point, Iris does a little investigative reporting and threatens the very slimeball Tar Pit has set his sights on. Using her evidence to convince Joe he needs to stop Wally, the two show up at the races the same time Tar Pit does.
Morphing with the road, Tar Pit begins to buckle and uproot the road, lifting Wally’s car and flipping it. Flash is able to save Wally, but the car comes crashing down, glass and car parts flying everywhere.
Spotting a shard of glass headed right for Iris, Flash makes a beeline for her, but due to the speed-stealer attached to his suit, he’s not fast enough.
Fortunately the shard only hits her shoulder, but the reality that things could have been worse not only weighs heavy on Flash’s heart, it triggers Harry to confess his betrayal.
Furious, Joe attacks Harry and throws him in the tube.
With the truth about Harry’s deceitful plan to save his daughter revealed, Team Flash finds themselves facing a dilemma.
Do they send Harry back to his Earth, closing the breaches behind him so neither he nor Zoom can return?
That’s right Harry and Barry did find a way to close the breaches.
This option would most definitely be a death sentence for Harry’s daughter and Harry too.
Or, do they band together to help him save Harry’s daughter?
The initial gut reaction for all of them is to send him back, but after some soul searching, Barry gives a moving speech pointing out that he was just doing what he had to do to save his daughter. Zoom gave him no other option.
As Barry states, “When it comes to family, the people we love, we’re all vulnerable and capable of making a wrong decision.”
With that said, they all make a mutual decision, to travel to Earth 2, as a Team, to save Harry’s daughter.
Father Knows Best
On the West family front – after Iris’ close call, Joe realizes she was right that Wally needs a Father not a friend and lays it on the line with Wally. Acknowledging that he can’t tell him how to live his life, but he has people who sit up at night worried about his welfare. That’s family, his family, and family looks out for each other.
By the looks of the preview for next week, Team Flash’s adventures should get extremely interesting when both Barry and Caitlyn come up against their Earth 2 doppelgangers.
Looking forward to seeing the darker side of Caitlyn’s doppelganger.
