Hello lovely Collective readers! Katie here, the resident expert in geeky aesthetics. However, today I am not talking about makeup, I’m talking about the Oscars and who I think will take home the big prize on February 28th. Which makes me think, what kind of stuff is in Oscar swags bags? One of us needs to sneak into the Oscars and find out. Also find out if Leo’s swag bag is filled up more because the Academy feels guilty for never giving him an award.

As of right now, I have yet to see any of the films nominated this year, so l’m really just playing a guessing game here. So let’s go through and talk about some of this years nominees in each category.

Actor In A Leading Role

  • Bryan Cranston Trumbo
  • Matt Damon The Martian
  • Leonardo DiCaprio The Revenant
  • Michael Fassbender Steve Jobs
  • Eddie Redmayne The Danish Girl
20th Century Fox
20th Century Fox

I think everyone on planet Earth wants Leo to finally get this award. I don’t have any doubt in my mind that The Revenant will be the film that earns Leo his Oscar, despite how much I am NOT looking forward to seeing it. But the Academy is unpredictable and they don’t seem to have any pity for poor DiCaprio. So, I could see Eddie Redmayne (whose performance in The Danish Girl looks absolutely brilliant), Matt Damon, or Michael Fassbender swooping in and taking that Oscar. Fingers crossed for Leonardo DiCaprio though, I’m rooting for you!

Actress In A Leading Role

  • Cate Blanchett CarolMV5BMjE4NzgzNzEwMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTMzMDE0NjE@._V1_UY1200_CR90,0,630,1200_AL_
  • Brie Larson Room
  • Jennifer Lawrence Joy
  • Saoirse Ronan Brooklyn
  • Charlotte Ramping 45 Years

Why did I pick two? Because I really have no idea who will take this one. I’m hoping for Brie Larson, because she stands out to me as a breakout star of 2015. From what I hear, her performance in Room alongside Jacob Tremblay was beautiful. However, we all know how much the Academy (and all of us) love Jennifer Lawrence. She charms viewers every year with her awkward personality and again, her performance in Joy as a strong business woman is everything I want in a female character. I guess we will just have to wait and see, they both won Golden Globes (Lawrence for Comedy/Musical and Larson for Drama). I can guarantee however that Saoirse Ronan will not win, simply because the presenter will have no idea how to say her name.  It’s pronounced “Sur-sha” in case you were curious.

Best Picture

  • The Big Short
  • The Martian
  • Bridge of Spies
  • The Revenant
  • Spotlight
  • Brooklyn
  • Mad Max: Fury Road

Ah, Best Picture, the most important category of all! The Revenant led the nominations, with 12 nominations total. Both Leonardo Dicaprio and Tom Hardy has received a ton of praise for their performance, and I believe Alejandro Inarritu will take home the Oscar for directing. Despite my personal feelings towards this film and what I’m expecting out of it, I think it will make the big win on February 28th. Personally, I am rooting for Spotlight and Mad Max: Fury Road. Why Mad Max? Because it’s different, it’s a wild card, and I like to see the wild cards win once and a while.

Who do YOU think will win at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony? Who are you personally rooting for? Let us know in a comment below. Also, if you want to hear more about the films nominated, the Collective team is reviewing the Best Picture nominees. I’ll be back to talk about The Big Short, Brooklyn, and Spotlight. Keep your eyes peeled for those! Happy Oscars season!
