In the aftermath of the Sherlock special, here are three Johnlock stories to help you with all those feels you don’t know what to do with.
“The Two of Us Against the World” by slashscribe (AO3)
Pairings: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Word Count: 1617
Author’s Summary
John is there to take care of Sherlock as he comes down from his overdose in The Abominable Bride. Set immediately after the tarmac, back in 221B.
My Thoughts
I can always count on slashscribe to be there when I don’t know what to do during a hiatus. This story is a short, but much-needed, emotional boost after the end of TAB.
“In A Changing Age” by allonsys_girl (AO3)
Pairings: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Word Count: 15,590
Author’s Summary
Sherlock wakes up in the 19th century, with no idea how he got there.
My Thoughts
While I’ve encountered a fair few stories with a similar plot to this, allonsys_girl handled these tropes in all the right ways. Our modern-day Sherlock is suddenly in the late 1800s with a Victorian Doctor Watson who loves him very much. This is especially meaningful in the wake of TAB, with it’s blurred timeline and intense homoerotic subtext.
“Back to the Start” by slashscribe (AO3)
Pairings: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Word Count: 14,088
Author’s Summary
Sherlock hasn’t played the violin since John’s wedding (which is long since over), and when John returns to 221B, Sherlock relearns the violin as he and John relearn each other. Post S3 fic with an obscene amount of pining, idiocy, and attempts to pawn off tea duties.
My Thoughts
This story may be sluggish for some, but I loved every second of the slow burn. There are a crazy amount of violin references, which may not appeal to every reader. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this peek into Sherlock’s convoluted emotions. The use of music to convey both sentiment and personal growth was simply lovely to read.
