While costuming has been around for centuries, the first documented cosplay* was in 1939 at New York’s WorldCon. The hobby skyrocketed in the 60s with Star Trek, the 70s with Rocky Horror, and the 80s with Star Wars. Star Wars cosplayers are some of the most dedicated costumers you’ll find, as the gallery below illustrates. This is, of course, only a small sampling of all the great costumes out there.
