Take Me Home Country Roads” by saltyfeathers (AO3)

Pairings: Dean Winchester/Castiel
Word Count:124,864
Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence

Author’s Summary

Dean dies with the Mark of Cain on his arm, waking up with black eyes and hellfire licking at his heels.

Cas, sick on the stolen grace that’s rotting inside him, gives chase.

As his pursuit and Dean’s evasion ebbs and flows, they begin to figure out the difference between marks given and marks received, and what it means when one such mark is faded but not forgotten.

My Thoughts

To be completely honest, I had a different fic picked out for this week. But then I read this story, and forgot everything else. Not only did this keep me sane during my Thanksgiving vacation, but it is an angsty, single-man-tear heartfelt fix-it fic for the Demon!Dean storyline. I always felt as though that character was wrapped up too quickly in order to make way for the Mark of Cain arc. Luckily, saltyfeathers provides an alternative season 10 in which we get an in-depth understanding of Dean’s demonic motivations, as well as the unwavering love Castiel has for him. The fic had me sobbing in the first chapter, so be warned that heavy emotions await you. (The gross crying was totally worth it.)

Although there is a distinct lack of Sam’s presence (which I found incredibly OOC), I enjoyed the fic enough to forgive his absence. If you like a healthy dose of angst and epic love, then this is the story for you.

Happy reading,
