I power watched season 1 of HTGAWM so that I could enjoy the second season live and, after discovering that I have a really disturbing obsession with the topic, I’ve decided to pen weekly reviews of this ground-breaking show. If you’re not caught up with the current season, visit Netflix and watch Season 1, then go to ABC.com to watch season 2 with me. Enjoy!
Spoilers ahead, Sweetie…
S2xE09: “What Did We Do?”
There’s so much going on in the midseason finale, and yet, all I care about is who shot Annalise and maybe whether or not Nate is going to take his shirt off again this episode. No, but seriously, we start off right where we left off last week, which is a post-coital murder weapon reveal between Caleb and Michaela, who calls her new BFF, Connor, for help. We also imediately find out that Judge Millstone has committed suicide and Asher’s mom is a total bitch who blames her son for her husband being a lying prick. In the meantime, Annalise is trying to cover her tracks with her involvement in Millstone’s corruption case, Nate’s tampering with Phillip’s police record, and of course, win her case. The time line for the mideseason finale jumps around like a Doctor Who episode, but it works, as pieces of the puzzle slowly fall into place. The two mysteries of who shot Annalise and how Sinclair died are solved in this episode and, in terms of Sinclair, I’m with Annalise when she says the woman brought it on herself.
We first see Sinclair and Nate at the precinct, where she accuses him of tampering with Phillip’s record (which he did, but still) and then brings up Annalise and Nia in the same argument, pissing Nate off so much, he kinda sorta threatens her in front of his boss and gets himself fired. Later, she finds out Nate has filed a racial descrimination suit to her assault charge and says she’ll stop harrassing him if he helps take down Annalise. Nate pretends to take it into consideration, but of course he calls his boo and tells her exactly what Sinclair is up to. Later, we see Sinclair leaving her job and confronted by an emotionally fraught Asher, where she proceeds to talk shit about his dead dad.
Classy move, lady.
In a twist I did not see coming, Asher backs over the D.A. and kills her, then sits quietly waiting for Bonnie to come and rescue him. The least incendiary of the Keating Five has joined the ranks of murderer, and when Annalise finds out, she does what she always does, and protects her little babies in the only way she knows how; by being the craziest bitch on the block.
And the pieces start to fall into place–we know how Sinclair died, we know how Catherine and Phillip are connected, we can guess why Frank fakes his concern at the hospital for Annalise and dumps a drugged Catherine (with the pills Annalise didn’t give Nia) in the woods. We know why Asher is freaked out and why he perhaps ends up at the precinct to give a statement–although it isn’t after Bonnie cleans Sinclair’s blood off of herself because we see him pop up at the gas station after buying a car wash to clean Sinclair’s blood off. The episode leaves to last the final mystery, which is the most pressing of all–who shot Annalise. Come to find out, Annalise’s plan to save Asher and win her case involves her getting shot, which she tries to convince one of the Keating Five to commit.
It’s interesting how Annalise delves into the psyche of each of her students in order to tempt them to go along with her plan. She touches on why each of the KF should do what she asks, and when Asher enters in to the little Michela/Connor/Wes/Laurel circle of trust, Annalise does the only thing she can to get them to help with Sinclair’s body, she rats them out about killing Sam in order to unite the team, although, I’m still not sure how well that worked out for any of them.
Viola Davis is a vision in this final scene–teetering on the verge of pyschotic as Annalise meticulously tears apart the ones she loves in order to get away with multiple murders and protect those same people. Although Annalise pushes their buttons, she fails to convince Connor, Michela and Laurel to help and it seems Annalise might lose…that is, until she turns to Wes and confesses Rebecca has been dead for months. Wes, usually the level headed one, shoots and means to kill Annalise, until he hears her whispering his secret name??
So now we know why Nate is involved and how, how the gun got in Wes’ hands and who shot Annalise, how Sinclair died and why Asher’s so important this season. The flash forwards have all come to fruition and we are left with a new mystery that involves Eve (yay!), Annalise and a young Wes, who we see in a 90s flashback (Annalise has braids and Eve looks exactly the same) in a police station after his mother’s supposed suicide. Eve, Annalise, what did you do??
That last scene is an intense example of why Viola Davis and this show are my new favorite things. My heart was in my throat the entire time and, when Wes hears Annalise whisper and then we flashback AGAIN? HOLY SHIT, I love time travel. There are so many secrets in the Keating household and Annalise has been at the center of everything the entire time. Now I have to wait until February to see Annalise with braids and Eve in gold lame??
Time to contemplate murder for two months…
