Okay so things are starting to heat up in the SHIELD headquarters. There’s a new big bad Inhuman on the loose, SHIELD is getting professional competition in the form of the ATCU, and tensions are really beginning to rise between humankind and the “enhanced.” So without any ado, let’s talk superheroes.
“Devils You Know” begins with the Lash killing three Inhumans who were approached by another named Alisha on behalf of SHIELD. Coulson and friends are on the scene, and so is the ATCU in the form of Rosalind, who we don’t entirely trust. However, she and Coulson have some intense chemistry, and I think I speak for most of the fandom when I say that we started shipping Coulsalind this week.
While Daisy, Mack, and Coulson are in the field, the rest of the team rests around base, most of them frustrated with their current status. Bobbi is still rehabilitating from injuries–and isn’t it a bit refreshing to see a tv character not magically heal in one episode? Jemma is consulting with Andrew about her recent trip back from the other dimension, and Fitz? Fitz is in the lab, as per usual.
Coulson and friends track down the killer of the Inhumans to an IT guy named Frye (Hello, Chad Lindberg!). After I pondered the possibility that this was just a guy from The IT Crowd who had finally cracked after the 10,000th “Did you try turning it off and on again?”, they discover the man in a closet screaming at them to “Get out.” While I am firmly against being in the closet for any reason, I’m glad that Daisy listened to him and used her power to keep in the closet until back-up arrived. Turns out IT guy is allergic to other Inhumans and has been used by Lash as a ‘divining rod’ for others like them. Frye is convinced that Lash is doing work that needs to be done, that the world should be rid of Inhumans.
Lash of course, finds the SHIELD agents as they try to transport Frye to another location. Frye swears to Lash that he didn’t tell SHIELD anything, but Lash kills him anyway. Camera pans out and we learn by watching Lash’s shadow that he can transform into a human.
Meanwhile Melinda May and Hunter are getting closer to finding Ward. Hunter has infiltrated Hydra’s ranks, and has gotten in way over his head. May goes to Coulson for help, and can I just say that it’s so nice to see the BFFs together again?
While Hunter is thrown in the boot of a car to be taken to Hydra headquarters (yes, boot, it’s British for trunk), May arranges for SHIELD to be at a weapons drop but before backup arrives, Hunter is recognised by Ward and so the plan goes to hell. However, when May realises that Ward has her ex-husband, Andrew, at gunpoint, Hunter doesn’t allow her feelings to factor into his mission and he goes after Ward, guns blazing. Ward escapes, inevitably because it’s too soon in the season for Hydra to be taken off Coulson’s “Most Wanted” bulletin board. The fate of Andrew is unknown.
“Devils You Know” ends with Jemma telling Fitz that she has to go back to the other dimension, and a tantalizing teaser that in next week’s episode, we will discover what really happened to her.
Where We’re Headed
The ATCU is cooperating with SHIELD, for the moment, but I think that is more because of the new ship in my armada, Coulsalind, than because the two organizations want to work together. Speaking of Coulsalind, anyone want to place a bet on how long they’ll keep up this flirtatious relationship? I’m sensing a Mr. & Mrs. Smith vibe…
Now that May and Hunter are back in the fold, and Ward is on the loose (again), I wonder how long the team will be together this time. Will Hunter continue his mission to rip Ward limb from limb or will the team come together to focus on taking out Lash? Personally, Ward seems like the lesser of two evils. I’d like for the show to prove that Ward has gone full dark side, because whenever he’s faced with his former SHIELD teammates, I feel like he’s holding back.
The show will probably be focusing on the hunt for Lash, now that we know that he can pass as a human. The title of the episode “Devils You Know” implies that we’ve probably already met him. Anyone have a theory? I’m thinking Andrew, but I’m hoping it’s not Andrew.
The real question: does Coulson’s new hand really have a laser?
