Yesterday, the much-anticipated official trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released during Monday Night Football. And we mean the official trailer—none of that teaser trailer torture. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m sure you seen it, in all its magnificent glory. You haven’t? I’ll wait.
Needless to say, Episode VII is one of the most anticipated movies in history, and the trailer pretty much broke the internet. Fans went gaga for new theories, over-analyzations of each screen capture, and ticket purchases. Numerous websites, including ticket giants Fandango and AMC Theaters, crashed after deluges of customers attempted to preorder their December 17/18 tickets.
Even though experts have been predicting mega record-smashing sales (possibly a $615 million worldwide opening), what will matter most is not how much money the film makes, but how it makes us feel. The trailer and the ensuing reactions of fans are solid indications of what bringing back a franchise the right way can do for our emotions. Did you cry when we got our glimpse of Leia? I know I did.
