Fanfic Wednesday: Destiel’s Greatest Hits Part 2

Greetings, shippers.

The Hellatus is upon us, friends, and to ease the burden of no new episodes, I’ve put together a little fanfiction care package for you, a part two to my Destiel favouritesSo warning, darling, if slash and a profound bond that ascends into the realm of the metaphysical isn’t for you, I suggest looking for recs someplace else, because obviously you took a wrong turn on the Internet.

Click on the title to read the story. 🙂

(There is now a part three.)

On Air by wincechesters (madefrommemories)

Author’s Summary: Cas and Dean are radio DJs who host the second most popular morning show in Lawrence. They’ve been co-hosts for years at different stations across the country, and they own a house together out of necessity, even though they’re just friends. But for some reason, a lot of their listeners and even some of their friends and family seem to think that they’re secretly in some kind of relationship, which they’re totally not (besides that one time that totally doesn’t count). In spite of that, Dean thinks he’s got everything figured out, until an ill-fated on air game of Truth or Dare turns everything upside down (and the billboards around town aren’t helping either).

My Thoughts: Dear SPN writers, please make these two idiots play Truth or Dare. For realsies. Sincerely, the fandom.

Close to You by squeemonster

Author’s Summary: The one where Dean and Castiel are vets in Vegas, and Dean’s crippling crush finally gets the best of both of them.

My Thoughts: This is one time when what happens in Vegas, should definitely not stay in Vegas.

Following You in the Dark by Bones (thepiesandthebees)

Author’s Summary: After Sam and Jess drag him to a private ballroom dance lesson, Dean decides to try dancing, intrigued by the instructor, Castiel, and Castiel isn’t at all deterred by the fact that Dean is blind.

My Thoughts: There are no words in the English language to accurately describe how happy this fic makes me. If you need a pick-me-up, look no further.

Out of the Deep by riseofthefallenone

Author’s Summary: Stay away from the light-beds. Stay in the deep. It is the first thing hatchlings are taught the moment their fans unfurl and they can swim without their parents to buoy them along. It is the first rule, the first law. It is the beginning of every boogey-monster bedtime story told when they settle against the cliffs to sleep. Castiel should have listened better.

My Thoughts: Every once in a while, a fic comes along that changes my life. This is one of those. I never thought I’d fall in love with a mermaid fic (excuse me, fin-kin), but I’m enamoured. Castiel and Dean are beautifully characterised, the world is beautifully realised, and if you don’t finish reading this one with a smile on your face and tears in your eyes, your name might be Abaddon.

Après by imogenbynight

Author’s Summary: When the angels stop falling and Castiel makes his way out of the trees, he finds himself alone and oceans away from the Winchesters. For once, Dean flies to him.

My Thoughts: Dean. Castiel. Romantic interlude in Paris. Ooh la la.

My Roots Take Flight by KismetJeska

Author’s Summary: After forty years in Hell, Dean’s more than willing to accept the offer: become a guardian angel and earn his freedom. But his new ward seems destined to hunt alongside Sam, and there are secrets in Heaven that the angels don’t want found out. Dean’s going to have to choose between his duty and the people he loves- and to work out just where Castiel fits in.

My Thoughts: This season 4 AU tells the same story from a different perspective, and it’s beautiful. Petition for more Angel!Dean, please.

Just After, But Before by cymbalism

Author’s Summary: Just after Purgatory, and before whatever’s next, Dean has a broken angel to put back together.

My Thoughts: Oh, the angst. So much angst. It’s obligatory for a post-Purgatory fic, but for every ounce of angst, there’s an equal amount of emotional and physical intimacy for our two idjits.

Hummingbirds by strangenessandcharm

Author’s Summary: Castiel is rendered mute after being taught a painful lesson, but that enables Dean to learn a few lessons of his own while holding onto something important for him. Elsewhere, someone really loves to count...

My Thoughts: I’m a sucker for hurt/comfort fics, and this one stole my heart. Cas watching Sesame Street? I can’t even.

Ad Astra by nhixxie

Author’s Summary: One day Cas says, “Stars died for you, Dean Winchester”, against ruffled hair perched atop sun kissed skin and sleepy eyes.Dean stirs, moving to spread his palms against the contour of Cas’ back, tips of fingers languidly strumming the indentations of his spine. One, two, three, four, he counts, the closest he could get to scientifically studying the anatomy of the human body. “Is this some physics crap again?” He frowns with eyes closed. Cas smiles softly. “Far from it.” Dean’s fingers play at the base of his back, ninth thoracic vertebrae, Cas notes. “Then tell me all about it.”

My Thoughts: No other words for this one but “breathtaking.”

okay, cupid by orange_crushed

Author’s Summary: “The dating thing?” Dean frowns. “Online dating is for weirdos. Robots. Dudes hanging out in their basements.”
“You hang out in your basement.”
“I have an air hockey table down there,” Dean says, icily.

My Thoughts: Remember that one episode where Dean tries a dating app? This is how it should have gone.

The Flock by Museaway

Author’s Summary: A two-story structure stands out against a yellowed field. He didn’t notice it before.

My Thoughts: I know this is a gen fic, but it’s so damn good it needed to be recced. Good, and pretty damn terrifying. Petition to have museaway write an episode of season 11.

A Judicious Application of Free Will by Annie D (scaramouche)

Author’s Summary: Dean lives the simple life in Lawrence, running the family business at Winchester Hardware. When Castiel moves into the neighborhood, they strike up a friendship that has the chance to become something more. But before that can run its course, the secrets of Castiel’s past catch up with them both, and their whole world changes.

My Thoughts: Scaramouche writes food for my soul.

Happy reading!
