Geektivities: The Newport Beach Film Fest April 23-30

The Newport Beach Film Festival kicked off with an Opening Night Gala at Fashion Island on Thursday, April 23rd and continues through April 30. With 8 venues, there are up to 15 shows happening each day of the film fest all over Orange Country. There are various types of films to be premiered at the 8-day festival, including movies in the UK, Latin, children/teen and documentary spotlights.

The theme this year is “Know New Art” and, while it may sound a little pretentious, there’s no denying the OC is Southern California’s elite beach and art community. Laguna holds The Pageant of the Masters, Costa Mesa has the Sergerstrom Center for the Arts not to mention the boutique stores and restaurants that line the streets of Newport Beach itself.

Some of the films look really good, but I’m most excited for Set Fire to the Stars, the UK Spotlight film to be shown at The Triangle tomorrow night. It’s about Dylan Thomas and the man who helped introduce him to America, John Brinnin (Elijah Wood).

In the face of his idol Dylan Thomas’ excesses and volatile personality, John Malcolm Brinnin has no choice but to shanghai the brilliant Welsh poet to a remote cabin to prepare him for his debut to America.
