It’s Not a Spinoff! AMC’s “The Walking Dead” Companion Show Gets 2 Seasons, Cast Members and A Name

AMC has officially ordered two seasons of The Walking Dead companion show, with the tentative title Cobalt (also have seen Fear: The Walking Dead), 6 new faces in the post-apocalyptic universe and an air date. Premiering summer 2015, the series will be set in Los Angeles (I love when shows are set in my hometown) and follow six survivors in a sort of prequel that chronicles the start of the epidemic.

Some spoilers ahead, Sweetie…

According to TVLine, the following are character sketches of the Angelino Tribe:

SEAN CABRERA | A Latino male in his early 40s, Sean is a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.

CODY CABRERA | Sean’s whip-smart and rebellious teenage son. Known as the angriest kid in town.

NANCY TOMPKINS | A thirtysomething single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there’s an edge to her.

NICK TOMPKINS | Nancy’s screwed up teenage son. He’s too old to stay home, too scared to flee.

ASHLEY TOMPKINS | Nancy’s mostly level-headed teenage daughter. Her ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures. She loves her mom but it’s time to get out of Dodge.

ANDREA CHAPMAN | A somewhat wilted flower child, fortysomething Andrea — yep, another Andrea! — has retreated to the outskirts of the city to recover after a horrible marriage.

A leaked script (that was quickly removed from the web) let us know that this will be a very different take on the current TWD series, in that we will see the beginnings of the walker epidemic, which will lead to a lot of suspense and a more typical zombie film feel (think Dawn of the Dead). The show will follow divorced teacher (Cliff Curtis) and guidance counselor (Kim Dickens), who are dating, working together and surviving the outbreak with their teen children in tow.

With the success of Better Call Saul, AMC’s Breaking Bad spin-off, I have high hopes for a quality series that explores the universe of TWD while distancing itself from the original by the span of years and distance.
