Yes, dear reader, your geeky dreams have indeed come true. Marvel.com has confirmed the rumours that Benny is slated to play the Supreme Sorcerer in the November 4, 2016 release of Doctor Strange.
After the recent announcement of the release dates of Marvel’s Phase 3 films, which includes Cap 3 to Avengers: Infinity War and everything in between, it’s no surprise that the MCU has started to reveal more information about the forthcoming films. Doctor Strange is the 2nd film on the Phase 3 schedule and will be directed by Scott Derrickson, written by Jon Spaihts and produced by (the infallible) Kevin Feige. According to Marvel.com, “The film…will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.”
Cue the angst, Benny feels and a sharp looking goatee.
There has been chatter on the interwebs condemning the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch, an Anglo Brit, has taken a role that should have gone to a POC. In the comics, Doctor Strange is from the US, born and bred in middle-class, midwest America. While the snazzy facial hair and slicked-back ‘do look a bit exotic, I’m not sure that this should be an issue, but, of course, it is. While I agree that the MCU would only benefit from casting amazing POCs in roles for POCs, as a woman of color, I’m mostly pleased with the diversity in the Marvel Universe. That being said, can we get a Black Widow movie or a Storm film, pretty please??
