About After Camlann
I’m back, shippers!
Yes, after a summer off from reccing fanfic, I have returned to you, my faithful followers of my fleet of ships. I hope you enjoyed the Collectiva Diva’s recs over the past ten weeks or so, but no fear, I’ve been doing my reading and I have a lovely list of fics to rec to you over the next few months. Let me also draw your attention to the lovely header that my dear Collected Mutineer has created for Fanfic Wednesday. Swoon away.
Now, before I jump into my review of this week’s fic, let me explain the need for my hiatus from reccing. I took on a big task this summer: I participated in not one but two Big Bang fanfic challenges and I needed the time to write. However, from this mighty task came several fanfics to rec! My first BB extravaganza was the After Camlann challenge, which is for the BBC Merlin fandom. The requirements for this challenge were to create a story with a length of at least 25,000 words, from which the artist you were paired with would draw inspiration for their works. The best part about participating in this challenge was reading the other participants’ fics and swooning over the art, and one of the first I read also happens to be my favourite. Allow me to introduce you to the Merlin/Warm Bodies fusion.
The story focuses on Em, an unwilling member of the undead who shuffles about an airport collecting dragon mementos until he meets Arthur, the son of the leader of the human survivors. Unwilling to kill Arthur for his brains, Em brings the human back to his zombie lair–aka a landed jet–and does his best human impression to convince the young man that he’s not try to eat him the way he ate his sister, Morgana.
Arthur has been trained to kill zombies on sight, but when Em saves his life, he no longer knows what to believe about the undead. Is it possible for a zombie to have feelings and is it possible for a human to have feelings for a zombie?
Warm Bodies is one of my favourite films. Merlin is one of my favourite television shows. So a fusion of the two, well, my heart is still doing the Carlton dance of happiness.
Ok, but premise aside, jinkandtherebels gives readers a lovely meal of solid writing, snarky zombie humour, followed by a decent amount of Merthurian fluff and angst. Also, brains. Her characterization of a zombie Merlin is believable enough to where I wonder where this knowledge of the undead came from (not from experience, I hope), and well, Arthur is still a loveable prat no matter what AU he’s set in.
So why should you read this story? Let me count the reasons.
- It’s well written. Exceedingly so.
- Zombies. Who doesn’t like zombies?
- Jinkandtherebels is spot on in her characterisation of a prat king of legend and his sorcerer.
- This sentence: “Thumbs pressing hard into my heart, forcing it to beat again.”
- It gives us everything we love about Merlin and Arthur: the hilarious insults, the witty conversations (although Em has a decidedly slower tongue this time round), true friendship, and a bond thousands of years in the forging.
I can’t possibly say enough wonderful things about this story, so I’ll just say this: read it. Read it if you love zombies, if you love Merlin/Arthur, and mostly, if you just want to read a fucking good fanfic, because that’s what this is.
Also, don’t forget to leave the author and the artist love over on AO3.
Happy reading, shippers.
