Author Summaries:

(Part 1) You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To

“What about you, Barnes?” asks Dugan. The sound of his voice brings Bucky back to the present, dredges him out of memories of a beat-up little apartment with sunlight streaming in through the windows. “Got yourself a girl waiting for you back home?”

There’s an answer on the tip of his tongue, one that he’ll deliver with a cocky grin and a half-laugh and a little shake of his head. But Bucky is exhausted and hungry and so sore it hurts to move, and one of the guys in their platoon fucking died yesterday. His mouth tastes like iodine water and his feet hurt and none of it’s going to get better any time soon, and all at once Bucky misses Steve so badly he can barely see straight.

“Yeah,” Bucky declares abruptly, the word escaping from his mouth before he fully realizes what he’s saying. “Yeah, I do.”

[This fic presents a self-contained story that can easily be read on its own. If desired, however, it can also be read as a prequel to “Reconstruction Site” and “Amidst the Rubble”. It takes place chronologically first but was written third.]

 (Part 2) Reconstruction Site

He is the Winter Soldier.

He is James Buchanan Barnes.

He’s not one and he’s not the other, and he’s not sure if that makes him anything worth saving.

[In which the Winter Soldier leads Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson on a wild goose chase through Eastern Europe so that he can learn more about the man who actually thinks he can be saved. This fic takes place chronologically second in the series but was written first.]

(Part 3) Amidst the Rubble (We Can Build a Better Us)

tumblr_inline_n50y7y2DfN1qhqb9q

Steve wants to be a good friend, to be selfless and strong and endlessly patient. To be confident that he’s making the right choices, doing the right things. To be the person that Bucky needs him to be.

Mostly he just feels useless instead.

None of it is easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is.

[This fic is a sequel to “Reconstruction Site” but can easily stand on its own. This fic takes place chronologically third in the series but was written second.]

My Thoughts

This is an all encompassing look at the story of Bucky, from Sergeant Barnes’ time in Italy to a post-Winter Soldier dealing with PTSD. This writer takes the story of Steve and Bucky and looks at it from Bucky’s POV (except part 3, which is Steve’s POV), giving a powerful and raw edge to everything from his tour in Italy and his realization of the feelings he harbours for Steve to the confusion of recovery after Hydra is dismantled and he begins to regain memories. This is not a happy, fluffy piece, but it is such a brilliant one, I can’t let another FF:W go by without sharing it with my Stucky shippers. If it’s any consolation, there is a happy ending, as is hinted in the title of part 3, but I’m not ashamed to admit I wept (in a good way) through part 1 pretty consistently, which I first listened to as a podfic (her voice is lovely). Bucky Barnes hasn’t had it easy, but with Steve there with him ’til the end of the line, things might actually turn out to be okay for both of them.

Kudos to the portrayal of Sam Wilson, Peggy Carter, Dum Dum Dugan and Natasha Romanoff! They are well-rounded characters that have a purpose besides just complimenting the Steve/Bucky story. This is one of my favorites, even though there’s not any smut. I always feel I should warn for lack of smut.

Enjoy!
