Doctor Who News: Series 8 Trailer and a Look at the 12th Doctor

Series 8 of Doctor Who is less than 2 weeks away, featuring Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor in “Deep Breath”, set to premiere Saturday, August 23 at 8pm on BBC America. Since the announcement that Capaldi was chosen to reprise the iconic role, the interwebs has been all aflutter with discussion on the merits of the actor as well as the characteristics of the 12th Doctor. As a born again Wholigan and a fan who began the series with no expectations, only to be blown away by the unique premise and consistent storylines, I am equal parts excited and terrified for the shifts in the space time continuum that are bound to happen with Capaldi. Check out the trailers for the S08xE01 and then let’s discuss what we know about this new, darker Doctor.

Released July 13

What we know so far:

  • The TARDIS is on fire at some point
  • There are Daleks
  • Clara isn’t sure how she feels about the 12th Doctor
  • There are steampunk robot men involved
  • Madam Vastra and Jenny will be working with Clara and the Doctor
  • Dinosaurs in London??
  • The 12th Doctor is in his night dress on a horse
  • The TARDIS got a makeover ala Twelve

While it isn’t much, there are a few intriguing points not to be overlooked. The Daleks, for instance, have always had large-scale plans in the scheme of the Whoniverse. If the sinister lifeforms plan on making an appearance in Series 8, we can count that the destruction they cause will be quite damaging. It always is. Also, it seems Clara has reservations on the character of Twelve. She doesn’t like his redecorations and she can’t seem to tell him he’s a good man. Yet. We have seen the suspicious hold-over companion with Rose Tyler and the Nine/Ten regeneration. For those two, it only took one alien invasion at Christmas to get over their issues. Although, the relationship between Clara and the Doctor never seemed charged with sexual tension, at least not like Rose/Doctor, the pair did seem to be close at the end of series 7, although viewers got little more than small glimpse of their time together. We can’t really know how long it will take Clara to warm up to Twelve, or if she ever will. Lastly, there seems to be a new, Victorian enemy with a robotic face. Could the G.I. be making a reappearance? Moffat developed and quickly dropped the story line of the Great Intelligence in series 7, but, if you remember, Mdm. Vastra often showed up in the episodes with that particular villain (Snowmen, Name of the Doctor). If I know Moffat, he has something up his sleeve with this plot point, but I’ll be damned if I have any clue what it might be (never claimed to be Sherlock Holmes). What I do know is, series 8 looks to be shaping into a dark, complex season that may reveal a Doctor who recognizes his power and wields it mightily.

One of our readers pointed out in the comments (Thanks Bec Graham!) that Moffat, Davies and Capaldi have discussed incorporating Peter’s previous roles in the Whoniverse (Fires of Pompeii, Torchwood verse) into the dialogue of S8. This means, we finally get an answer as to why we have seen Twelve before in the series. THIS IS EPIC.

  1. They are going to explain how Capaldi was in Pompeii and in Torchwood Series 3. Honest to God, I have been waiting for this series with bated breath.

I really hope I actually like Clara in this season. Maybe the fact that 12 isn’t young and ridiculous will help 🙂

    1. OH GOODIE! I hadn’t heard that one Bec, thanks for sharing 🙂 I cannot wait for this season. I anticipate a great run with Capaldi (as a long-time Whovian) keeping Moffat in line.

      1. Guys!!!!:
“We are aware that Peter Capaldi’s played a part in Doctor Who before and we’re not going to ignore the fact,” Moffat told Nerd3. “I’ll let you in on this. I remember Russell told me he had a big old plan as to why there were two Peter Capaldis in the Who universe, one in Pompeii and one in Torchwood. When I cast Peter, [Russell] got in touch to say how pleased he was, I said ‘Okay, what was your theory and does it still work?’ and he said ‘Yes it does, here it is’. So I don’t know if we’ll get to it… we’ll play that one out over time. It’s actually quite neat”.

        And here’s the full article:

Seriously, I felt like a bad Whovian because I was so excited for the Eleven/Twelve regeneration because of THIS.
(Current theory a friend of mine and I came up with: Captain Jack was in on it. Because he knew “John” in Torchwood. I sincerely hope this is true so we can have more of the delicious omnisexual captain :D)

      2. Absolutely not, you go for it! The more Whovian attention we give this storyline the more likely it is that Moffat will actually give us this gem ASAP!
