During a sweltering Los Angeles summer, rather than face the triple digit weather, I prefer to stay in an air conditioned space while the sun is up and enjoy the sanctity of 70 degrees. During the months of June-August, I don’t venture out until dusk, because after the heat lessens, the real fun begins around these parts. One of my favorite things to do in the LA area is spend my evenings at the Hollywood Bowl and experience a very laid back Los Angeles Philharmonic during their off-season, putting the films I love to music. Bring a picnic, a blanket and a bottle of wine and enjoy some amazing music at fairly decent prices. Tickets for these summer shindigs run from $11+ but trust me, even the cheap seats at the Bowl are great. Nestled in the Hollywood HIlls, the acoustics are amazing with a perfect view of the Hollywood sign and your fellow music lovers.
This year, the Hollywood Bowl summer calendar is filled with performances by artists like Nine Inch Nails, Ed Sheeran, and Pink Martini, which sound great, but I’m more interested in shows I can afford and actually get tickets to. The 2014 July 4-5 Spectacular at the Bowl will feature a pretty badass fireworks show along with the one and only Steve Martin and his band, the Steep Canyon Rangers. Yes, I said Steve Martin. And yes, he has a band, and they are a brilliant, banjo playing bunch (click the link!). But that isn’t it. July 18-19, Dreamworks Animation in Concert celebrates 20 years of awe inspiring characters, along with host, Jack Black. Bring the entire family to watch scenes from Shrek, Kung Foo Panda and more right there under the stars. If you’d rather enjoy a show, HAIR the Musical is on the stage August 1-3, or you can see a tribute to Alfred Hitchcock’s films Sunday, August 31.
If you’re not interested in maneuvering through Hollywood traffic, there are Park & Ride options in cities such as Pasadena, El Monte, Santa Monica, Chatsworth, Torrance and more. There’s your designated driver, right there!
Click the links to find out more and I will see you at the Bowl this summer.

Here’s a viddy of last summer’s tribute to Indiana Jones. LISTEN TO IT. WATCH IT. LOVE IT.
