Let’s chat some more about superheroes and comic books, shall we?
Last on Jimmy Kimmel’s late night talk show, the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer was premiered worldwide. And oh, boy. Have a look.
So how does this tie in with the rest of the Marvel ‘verse?
Well, if you sit through the credits at the end of The Avengers, you will see this:
That creepy blue-eyed villain? That’s Thanos, the super villain/Mad Titan who (in the Marvel comics) has fought against everyone from Spider-Man to the Fantastic Four. Now, the Powers that Be have been hush-hush about who is going to play the villain (in the end scene, he was portrayed by stuntman Damion Poitier), but loose lips have let it slip that Thanos will be a big, big part of the Guardians of the Galaxy film (and we assume that he’s the Big Bad that our heroes will encounter throughout the Phase 2 and Phase 3 of Marvel’s cinematic universe).
Now, at the end of Thor 2, we met this character, played by Benicio del Toro, named the Collector:
In the comic books, the Collector, Tanaleer Tivan, is involved in The Infinity Gauntlet storyline–and as we saw at the end of Thor 2, he now possesses one Infinity Stone (another one, the Tesseract, is in Asgard).
My money is betting that Guardians of the Galaxy will give us more of this storyline, and if the Mad Titan, Thanos, is involved, then we will be hearing much more about the Infinity Gauntlet in the cinematic future. (Perhaps I should have labelled this as “spoilers” but really, the comic books about this were published in the 1960s and 70s.)
Guardians of the Galaxy is set to be released August 1, 2014 in the USA. Doctor Who fans will rejoice in seeing Karen “Amy Pond” Gillan once again, although she looks rather different now.
