Let’s talk superheroes for a bit.
Last week the sequel to 2012 megahit The Avengers began filming. Joss Whedon is once again at the helm [insert happy dance here] and we are going to meet a few new characters (namely a new villain, as Loki will not be wreaking havoc in this one). To be specific, two villains. Possibly three.
May I introduce you to Ultron, the evil automatron, played by none other than:
That’s right, James Spader was Mr. Whedon’s one and only choice to play the titular villain. Now allow me to geek out for a moment: in the comics, Ultron is created by Henry Pym, AKA Ant-Man. Now I’ve read a few articles around the internet that speculate that Tony Stark will be behind the creation of the evil mastermind A.I. in the new film, but since Marvel has greenlighted an Ant-man film (starring Michael Douglas as the lead), I’m guessing that the May 2015 The Avengers: Age of Ultron will lead right into the Ant-man film due out July 2015.
The other villain we can expect to see in the biggest sequel to ever sequel is Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, and Thomas Kretschmann has been cast as the Nazi leader of HYDRA (does this mean we will possibly see him in Captain America: The Winter Soldier?)
Lastly, we can also expect to see Quicksilver (who showed up in the X-Men Days of Future Past trailer) and his sister, the Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen.
According to recent interviews with Olsen, we should not expect her to be wearing the provocative attire that the Witch sports in the comics, which, with Whedon’s awesome track record of portraying kick ass women, does not surprise me. And as Magneto’s daughter (yeah, it’s true), she is sure to be kick ass. In fact, I want nothing more in the world than to see the Scarlet Witch go head-to-head with the Black Widow. (My money is still on Romanoff.)
The next Marvel movie to hit theaters is Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which I only have to wait 43 days for…not that I’m counting (who am I kidding? I’ve been counting since Thor 2!) And if you’re like me and need a Marvel fix to get through the day, well, here’s the CA:TWS trailer that premiered during the Super Bowl.
