Throwback Thursday: Pirates of the Caribbean

Drink up, me hearties.

Also known as “the Jack Sparrow film,” The Curse of the Black Pearl sailed into theaters in 2003 and took the world by storm. I don’t know a single person who wasn’t using “savvy” in regular conversation by the end of that summer. It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since Captain Jack Sparrow swaggered into our lives, and how much the film has infiltrated our culture.

Check out these 25 Jack Sparrow quotes. I use at least seventeen of them on a regular basis. Seventeen.

The first film was so bloody good that it spawned three sequels (and there’s rumors of more). It had everything that a movie could want: pirates, adventure, a dark curse, and, of course, an undead monkey. If you’re looking for an example of a perfect film, this may well be it. After all, we’ve all heard of Captain Jack Sparrow, haven’t we?

In fact, my very first cosplay was Jack Sparrow, and, let me tell you, 10 years ago, a 17 year old girl dressing as a male pirate was a bloody big deal. Now, Jack Sparrow has domineered the franchise industry, and ten steps into any Disney store will give you a pirate’s booty of PotC paraphernalia. We’ve got blankets, shot glasses, hats, scarves, suitcases, bumper stickers, hell, I’ve even seen PotC bras. And best of all, PotC has given us this gem by The Lonely Island and  Michael Bolton:

I’ve got the sudden desire to watch the whole series.

Now, bring me that horizon.
